What should I do first if my home has water damage?

If it is safe, stop the water at its source, for example by turning off the main water valve, and switch off the electricity to wet areas. Move valuables out of the water, take photos for your records and your insurer, and call a water damage professional as soon as you can. The sooner the water is removed and the area dried, the less damage there is and the lower the risk of mold.

How quickly can mold grow after water damage?

Mold can start to grow on damp materials within 24 to 48 hours, which is why the EPA advises drying water-damaged areas and items within that time. Hidden moisture in walls, floors and insulation is the most common cause of mold after a leak.
